US Navy Inspected Whitney Navy Percussion Revolver
.36 caliber. 7.625" octagonal barrel. SN: 28596. Blued finish, color casehardened hammer and loading lever, brass triggerguard, smooth, 2-piece walnut grips. Single action percussion revolver with un-fluted six-chambered cylinder, grooved top strap rear sight and brass post front sight. Barrel marked in two-lines: E. WHTINEY/N.HAVEN. Face of cylinder with P/GG inspection, the mark of US Navy Commander Guert Gansevroot. A small US Navy {ANCHOR} reinspection mark appears on the top of the barrel forward of the frame as well. The matching serial number 28596 appears under the barrel, on the loading lever, on the cylinder arbor pin and on the rear face of the cylinder. No number was located on (or in) the frame. The revolver falls at the top of the range of late 1864 Washington Navy Yard delivered Whitney Navy Revolvers, many of which saw use with the Atlantic Blockading Squadron.
